In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
